ART Minner's Victory On February 29, 2012, Stephen "Minner" Santonia, senior at Sherman High School, Seth, West Virginia, was honored, along with other art students from around the state, was honored at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston. An awards ceremony and reception were held honoring the Congressional Arts Awards Contest and opening of the exhibit. The exhibition is sponsored in cooperation with the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts in celebration of National Youth Art Month. The artwork that Stephen Santonia entered into the contest was entitled Strange Tides. It was created by gluing yarn to poster in very interesting and colorful patterns making up a tree with an eye, a river with a man in a boat fishing, a fishing hook in the corner, and a fish at the bottom. He spent many hours working on this piece in and out of the classroom.
Stephen had a lot of competition in this contest with eighteen entries from Logan and Mingo counties, the only participating counties in Congressional District 3. His was the only entry from Boone County. Out of all of the entries from the district, Stephen's artwork was chosen for first place. Strange Tides will be on display at the West Virginia Culture Center now though April 1, 2012, and then be sent to Washington, D.C. Once the artwork is framed, it will be displayed at the United States Capitol Building for one year. The competition was judged by Vernon Howell of Barboursville, W.V. He was an art teacher at Barboursville High School for thirty years. Mr. Howell has won numerous awards for his three-dimensional sculptured collages constructed from paper. As an extra bonus, Stephen also won a $100.00 gift certificate from Dick Blick Art Materials.
